Photovoltaic Canopy

Our mission for a sustainable future will also be powered by the installation of a photovoltaic canopy over the parking lot. Aligning with Pittsburgh’s vision for sustainability, this large solar array will generate an estimated 1,216MWh of clean renewable energy each year, and ultimately:

  • Reduce electrical expenses for the Science Center
  • Reduce the urban heat island effect
  • Offer protection for vehicles and pedestrians from the elements
  • Lower CO2 emissions by over 1,000 metric tons per year

The photovoltaic canopy will advance the Science Center’s ambition to become a national model for the use of sustainable and renewable energy in an urban setting. The solar array will be featured in programming and educational interpretation in both the parking lot and the main building, fostering an understanding of both the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy.
