Each year, as the quantity and quality of entries increase in the Museum of Natural
History’s annual photographic competition, jurors have a greater challenge selecting
the winners.Shown here is the first-place photograph selected from among the 501
entries submitted by 210 photographers from 32 states and Italy. The winning images
were exhibited in the Museum of Natural History in the fall of 1995. Jurors, all
from Pittsburgh, were Lonnie Graham, director of photography at the Manchester Craftsment’s
Guild; wildlife photographer Donald Robinson; and Charles Wood, a professional photographer,
naturalist and instructor.
Amateur and professional photographers wishing to submit work for the 1996 competition
are invited to do so September 3-13. Cash awards are given to one first-place, two
second-place and three third-place winners. Winning entries, along with other selected
photographs, will be exhibited October 19-January 5 in the museum’s Changing Exhibits
Gallery. The Natural World Photographic Competition and Exhibition is supported by
the museum’s Mudge Environmental Education Program.
